Bob Dylan: Bootleg Series Volume 18. Through The Open Window, 1956-1963

Das Biopic „Like A Complete Unknown“ hat den jungen Bob Dylan wieder breit zurück ins öffentliche Bewusstsein gebracht. Da traf es sich gut, dass Dylans Management ohnehin seit längerem vorhatte, die Frühphase Dylans in der Bootleg Series zu beleuchten. Und so ergab sich die durchaus interessante und auch ein bisschen absurde Konstellation, dass der junge Dylan, gespielt von Timothée Chalamet die Leinwand eroberte und die Kinosäle füllte, während gleichzeitig der alte Dylan weiter unermüdlich die Konzertbühnen der Welt beackerte.

Ein Angebot für neue und alte Fans

Die neue Folge der Bootleg Series verknüpft nun die Bedürfnisse zweier Zielgruppen sehr geschickt. Das Interesse des durch den Film neu zu Dylan gestoßenen jüngeren Publikums und die alten Fans und Komplettisten, die ohnehin alles vom Meister kaufen. Wohl wissend, dass die jungen eher die Streaming- und Download-Plattformen nutzen, während die älteren nun in ihren Haushalt ein weitere Dylan-Prachtbox aufnehmen. Das Deluxe-Set mit 8 CDs (!) enthält 139 Tracks – 48 davon bisher unveröffentlichte Aufnahmen sowie 38 extrem seltene Stücke – und ein Hardcover-Buch mit ausführlichen Anmerkungen von Sean Wilentz und über 100 seltenen Fotos. Die 2-CD- und 4-LP-Highlight-Editionen enthalten jeweils 42 Tracks.

Die neue Veröffentlichung nimmt uns mit auf eine Reise von der Jugendzeit Dylans in Minnesota („Let The Good Times Roll“ 1956) über seine ersten Auftritte in Minneapolis und New York City bis hin zu seinem Durchbruch mit der Veröffentlichung von „The Freewheelin‘ Bob Dylan“ und seinem gefeierten Auftritt in der Carnegie Hall.

Vom Rock’n’Roller in Midwest zum Singer-Songwriter in New York

Wir erleben die Entwicklung Dylans Entwicklung als Songwriter und Musiker, von Minnesota bis zur Bohème von Greenwich Village in den frühen 1960er Jahren. Vom frühen Rock’n’Roller hin zum Woody Guthrie-Apologeten, der zum schnell zum Ausnahme-Songwriter wird. Wir seltene Outtakes von Columbia Records, Aufnahmen von Clubauftritten, kleinen, informellen Treffen, in Wohnungen von Freunden und von Jam-Sessions in längst vergessenen Musikerlokalen. Viele der Aufnahmen sind äußerst selten; andere wurden noch nie zuvor veröffentlicht.

Wer Dylan erst jetzt kennengelernt hat, den mag bei den hier versammelten Live-Aufnahmen erstaunen, wie gesprächig und humorvoll der junge Dylan auf der Bühne zwischen den Songs agierte. Auch dadurch gewann er die Herzen des Publikums. Dieser anfangs so linkische Dylan, der sein traditionelles, aus Folk und Country entlehntes Songrepertoire mit einer Stimme adelte, die so ganz anders war wie die schönen Stimmen von Joan Baez, dem Kingston Trio oder Peter, Paul und Mary. Er klang tatsächlich wie ein alter Hillbilly. Als wäre er leibhaftig der „Anthology Of American Folk Music“ entstiegen, der Bibel des Folk Revivals. Er klang wie diese geheimnisvollen Southerners, die so obskur wie faszinierend waren.

Dylan war das „ungewaschene Phänomen“, wie ihn Joan Baez nannte. Er weckte bei den Frauen die Mutterinstinkte, während er die Kerle teilweise nervte. Denn der junge Dylan saugte nicht nur alle Musik um ihn herum auf wie ein Schwamm, sondern er „lieh“ sich auch manche Platte und so manches Arrangement aus. Der junge Dylan war mutig, radikal und bisweilen rücksichtslos. Alles ordnete er seiner Kunst unter. Nur so schaffte er es, sich so rasant an die Spitze der Folk-Bewegung zu stellen. Bis er diese Leitfiguren-Rolle über hatte und die Folkszene hinter sich ließ.

Von der Gleichzeitigkeit und der Verbindung von Vergangenheit und Gegenwart

„Von dieser Zeit und diesen Orten ist diese Sammlung nur ein Fragment“, schreibt der Autor und Historiker Sean Wilentz in seinem 125-seitigen Begleittext. „Dennoch versucht die Sammlung als akustisches Zeugnis eines Künstlers, der zu sich selbst findet – oder in Dylans Fall zu seinem ersten von vielen künstlerischen Ichs –, Zeit und Raum zu überbrücken, nicht als nostalgische Schwärmerei, sondern als lebendige Verbindung zwischen Vergangenheit und Gegenwart, Alt und Neu, die nie so getrennt sind, wie wir vielleicht denken.“

So wird ein Schuh daraus. Eines der Lebensthemen von Dylan, die sich in seinen Songs ausdrückt, ist die Zeit und ihre Dimensionen Gleichzeitigkeit und Vergänglichkeit. Klang Dylan in seiner Frühzeit wie ein alter Hillbilly, so kann man derzeit Abend für Abend Dylan bei seiner Europa-Tournee beim Verjüngen zusehen. Da schlurft ein älterer Herr auf die Bühne. Aber kaum sitzt er am Klavier, da legt er einen musikalischen, spielfreudigen und rauflustigen Furor an den Tag, da wundert man sich, dass dieser Mensch schon 84 Jahre alt sein soll und man immer wieder über seinen nahe bevorstehenden Bühnenabschied munkelt. „Alt und Jung“, „Gestern und Heute“ war für Dylan nie wirklich wichtig. Er hat immer nach Gründen gefragt und Kontinuitäten sowie Widersprüche entdeckt.

Mit dieser Box entdecken wir die Wurzeln der Singer-Songwriter-Ikone, des Literatur-Nobelpreisträgers, Malers und Zeichners – gerade hat er das Buch „Point Blank“ mit hundert neuen Bildern von ihm veröffentlicht – die man heute noch in seinem Werk entdecken kann. Woody Guthrie, Walt Whitman, Jimmy Reed. Sie alle waren im Frühwerk versammelt, sie alle treffen sich in seinem Spätwerk wieder.

Fazit: Nehmen Sie sich die Zeit und tauchen sie ab in die frühe Dylan-Geschichte. Sie kommen klüger und froher von diesem Trip zurück, als Sie bei der Abreise waren.
